The health system in the province of Holguín has administered more than 500,000 booster doses of the Cuban Abdala vaccine, the first in Latin America to receive authorization for emergency use by the regulatory authority in the Island.

Immunization has the guarantees of human and material resources, including cold chains and specialized personnel at the 200 vaccinations points set up for this purpose.

These figures represent more than 85 percent of the population to be vaccinated in the 14 municipalities of Holguín, the third most densely populated after Havana and Santiago de Cuba, with around one million inhabitants, where health workers and vulnerable sectors are prioritized. Luis Orlando Castro, an official of the Provincial Directorate of Public Health, told ACN.

He noted that the incidence of serious and critical cases of the new coronavirus has also decreased in the territory and the digitization process is advancing, as part of the strategy to facilitate access to information.

He also referred to the importance of measures such as social distancing, the use of facemasks and hand washing, and added that people must continue complying with the prevention measures adopted, especially pregnant women, children and the elderly.

To date, more than 3,500 doses of national immunogens have been applied in Holguín, an essential step forward in containing COVID-19, according to data provided by the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Microbiology.

The vaccination schedules, applied according to the provisions of the Ministry of Public Health, include three injections and a booster dose in the case of Abdala (0-14-28 days), taking into account exclusion criteria such as chronic decompensated diseases, steroid use and oncological conditions, among others.
