The delivery of means of support to facilitate mobility to people with disabilities is one of the main programs of the Cuban Association of People with Physical and Motor Disabilities (ACLIFIM by its acronym in Spanish) to improve the quality of life of its members in the province of Holguín.
Alfonso Bermudez, a member of the association's board of directors, told the Cuban News Agency that among the most demanded implements are prosthetic arms and legs, wheelchairs and canes with one, two and three supports, which facilitate the movement of those affected by different pathologies and their social inclusion.
He specified that the program gives priority to patients with cerebral paralysis, quadriplegia, paraplegia, muscular dystrophy and other serious ailments, as well as school-age children whose conditions allow them to attend general or special education centers.
These implements are manufactured in the technical orthopedics workshop, located in that territory, which has maintained its services in the midst of the global economic crisis generated by COVID-19 and benefits around 2,000 people with disabilities annually, he said.
In Cuba, there are more than 74,000 people with limitations in one or several legs, grouped in ACLIFIM, whose work is aimed at achieving the optimal development of the people with disabilities and contributing to eliminate architectural barriers.
This association has more than 7,000 members in Holguin, where an integral strategy is implemented to facilitate a better quality of life, Alfonso Bermudez concluded.
