The 477th anniversary of the foundation of the Hato San Isidoro de Holguín is celebrated today in the city of the same name in eastern Cuba, which in these more than four centuries managed to become an important tourist and universal plaza.

At midnight this Monday, fireworks announced the arrival of the date, which Holguín residents celebrate proud of their land which is of historical and patrimonial values and a vision focused on progress and economic and social development.

There are several activities planned to honor Holguín, including the 20th edition of the workshop "The city we want", sponsored by the Office of Monuments and Historic Sites.

The event aims to declare El Yayal a Local Monument, a site considered by some historians as the exact point where the Hato was founded; In addition, it is the most important place of Hispanic transculturation in Cuba, according to several archaeological researches.

The city also celebrates the founding of the town of Holguín on April 4, 1720, which little by little grew between the rivers Jigüe (to the west) and Marañón (to the east) and at the foot of Cerro Bayado, an elevation known today, as Loma de la Cruz.

This territory has been one of those privileged by national history, since it was Cayo Bariay, on the north coast of the province, where in 1492 Christopher Columbus arrived on Cuban lands.

In addition, at the beginning of the 17th century, the Virgen de la Caridad, Patron Saint of Cuba, appeared in Holguín waters and this was the jurisdiction that contributed the most generals to the wars of independence (18), for which it is known as the "Nurse of the Revolution”.

To all this is added its intense cultural movement, the extensive tourism development, as well as the important contributions to the economy with exports of items such as nickel, tobacco and seafood.
