Companies in Holguín boost environmental protection actions

The promotion of environmental protection programs and cleaner production stands out among the priorities of the business system in Holguín, as part of the links between science, innovation and state entities, prioritized in the eastern territory.
The project has among its objectives the elimination of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), used in refrigeration systems and contaminants of the ozone layer, and the management of hazardous waste, essential to prevent damage to the soil and water supply sources water, promoted through initiatives such as the Environmental Training Network (REDFA).
Norkis Ochoa, a specialist from the Territorial Delegation of CITMA, said to the ACN that the group includes prioritized sectors of the economy such as nickel, water resources, food production and research centers, with notable results in the preservation of local riches.
She added that for a better organization of actions, indicators are established such as the reduction or solution of environmental problems, mainly in areas close to ecosystems of natural importance.
One of the entities with favorable results is the Holguín printing Company, where the refrigeration and lighting systems have been replaced. It also promotes the use of waste for use in the manufacture of school and office supplies.
Olga Seniv, specialist in environmental management of the entity, emphasized compliance with the hazardous waste management parameters used in printing and periodic maintenance of storage systems, of great importance in Cuban environmental regulations.
The REDFA is made up of more than 20 organizations and companies, including the University of Pedagogical Sciences, the University of Holguín, the Ministries of Agriculture and Tourism, and entities linked to the production of nickel.
Holguín is among the Cuban provinces with a sustained work in environmental education and protection of hydrographic basins, protected areas and coastal zones, which constitutes one of the main achievements of the territory.
