FARC leaders called on the government Tuesday to enact the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) for the benefit of the armed conflict's victims.

Colombia's President, Ivan Duque, is keeping the country on its toes, with only 10 days to the date for the enactment of the law, backbone of the Peace Agreement.

Regarding the delay to be endorsed, FARC leader Pastor Alape commented there is concern that the final fate of the Statutory Law is the same as the unfulfilled promise of the 16 special jurisdictions for peace agreed upon.

For his part, Jairo Quintero, representative to the House for the Fariano party, insisted that the victims must know the truth, be repaired and guaranteed the non-repetition of the conflict, not be used as an excuse to hinder the reconciliation of the country.
The JEP is indispensable for building peace in Colombia, emphasized FARC congressman.

FARC's National Political Council has pointed out that the JEP is crucial so that the victims can be repaired and guarantee the non-repetition of the conflict.

The JEP was created as part of the Peace Agreement reached after several years of negotiation in Cuba between the Colombian State and the dissolved Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army.

The aim of this jurisdiction is to guarantee the non-repetition of the events occurred during the war and to help restore the affected communities to lead the construction of a stable and lasting peace in Colombia.

Colombia needs the Special Jurisdiction for Peace, as it needs the latter, to overcome the night of hatred and grudges it sank into for so long, a FARC statement said last week.

President Duque is forced to sanction it in its entirety, or else make the Colombian state an agent of perfidy and condemn the nation to a tragic and shameful future, the ex-guerrilla's statement added.

The statutory law would allow the JEP, the court in charge of ruling on crimes and violent acts that occurred during the war, to take advantage of legal resources and allow the entity to function fully.

The presidency of the peace tribunal has stated that presidential sanction of the JEP Statutory Law would benefit 9,691 ex-FARC combatants, 1,958 members of the public force and 39 state agents who have so far submitted to this jurisdiction. / PL
