The Parliament of South Africa passed on Friday by majority vote a bill authorizing same-sex marriage. According to the motion, officials of the Department of Home Affairs should officiate these ceremonies, even if they are against them.
The legislation, which bears the name of Civil Union Amendment Bill, says that no state official can refuse to carry out such marriages.
According to estimates, of 409 interior offices in South Africa, about 88 were exempt from these marriages, and officials of that Department will have two years to train in this new function. / PL
