The Holguín Beekeeping Company boosts the production of organic honey with the aim to expand this exportable item, in high demand in European countries.

For the production of organic honey the hives should be located in areas free of industrial pollutants, including insecticides, and with clean water in municipalities such as Gibara and Banes.

Rogelio Saavedra, director of that entity, told the ACN that for the production of this type of honey, the quality of the queen bees is also guaranteed in the seven existing multiplier centers in the province, which closed 2021 with significant contributions from this component, recognized for its nutritional values.

He added that these species are replaced annually to increase productivity in the stages with the greatest number of flowers, a strategy aimed at maintaining the high standards required in the international market.

For his part, Eddy Infante, the company's production manager, said that the labor groups also benefit from the measures of the Ordering Task, which increases entries in freely convertible currency and payments greater than 35,000 pesos per ton.

He noted that sales are also maintained at Casa de la Miel in the city of Holguín, while contributions are made to the Provincial Company of Pharmacies and Optics (FARMOX), for the production of medicines.

Cuba is one of the Caribbean countries with the greatest potential in beekeeping and has more than 150,000 colonies of bees distributed on the island, according to the website of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Holguín currently has 178 individual producers and 411 apiaries distributed in the 14 municipalities, where assortments are diversified into derivatives such as wax, propolis, pollen and jelly, with the necessary technology and human capital to guarantee the quality and variety of this exportable item.
