SierraCristalThe presentation of a brochure with the main mountain ecosystems of Holguín province, distinguished the activities for the International Mountain Day, celebrated on December 11.
The brochure summarizes the main natural resources concentrated in the National Parks Alejandro de Humbolt, Pico Cristal and La Mensura-Piloto, said the ACN Berrty Juan, specialist in communication of the Center for Research and Environmental and Technological Services in the territory.

He noted that this material, published in digital format, also includes various protection measures, including sustainable use of the land, environmental education of the community and conservation of biological biodiversity.

As part of the programs for the conservation of the mountains, this eastern territory carries out a project with a landscape approach , aimed at establishing natural bridges among the protected areas, said Sergio Sigarreta, one of the specialists linked to the research.

This initiative, which extends to other regions of the country, facilitates the preservation of species through the creation of new sites for food and reproduction.

The celebration of the International Mountain Day in Holguín, which will run until December 15, includes tours of the ecological path La Sabina, Salto del Guayabo and Pinares de Mayarí, sites of great natural attraction, located in the east of the provincial head city.

The International Mountain Day, declared by the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) in 2003, is celebrated this year under the theme Mountains under pressure: climate, hunger, migration.

According to the UN, almost one billion people live in mountainous areas, and more than half of the human population depends on them to obtain water, food and clean energy.

But mountains are threatened by climate change, land degradation, overexploitation and natural disasters, with potentially far-reaching and devastating consequences, warns the international organization. / ACN
