After several days with reports of more than a hundred confirmed cases daily, the health authorities in the province of Holguín are increasing measures to protect vulnerable sectors, amid the outbreak of COVID-19 and its incidence among these population groups.
Dr. Alcides Lazo, an official of the Provincial Public Health Directorate, told the Cuban News Agency that the circulation of new variants of SarsCoV-2, with greater transmissibility, together with the low perception of risk, has conditioned the growth of the number of positive cases in pediatric ages and older adults.
He pointed out that in the eastern territory 88 children are admitted to the Fermín Valdés Domínguez Military Hospital and Villa El Cocal, among other centers prepared for the treatment of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus.
On the other hand, the primary health care system has increased active research and monitoring of infants, bedridden and disabled patients, together with the strengthening of biosafety measures in homes for the elderly and homes for children without family protection, among other social institutions.
The eastern province also extends the capacities for isolation of contacts and low-risk suspects to the 14 municipalities, in order to guarantee the admission of patients in the first 24 hours, one of the stages of the health protocol in which health professionals work intensely, Lazo explained.
As part of the epidemiological control measures, four open local transmission events are maintained in Gibara, Cacocum and the provincial capital, with more than five thousand people studied with Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests in real time.
Holguín reports more than 1,800 confirmed cases so far in June, which represents an incidence rate higher than 159 patients per 100 thousand inhabitants.
