The Territorial Office for Standardization in Holguín (OTNH) works to guarantee that the equipment, supplies and reagents used in the diagnosis, intervention and treatment of patients operate within quality limits and provide confidence to health professionals.

Metrologists from the northeastern territory calibrate the thermometers for the preservation of vaccine candidates, as well as the pressure regulator gauges used to supply additional oxygen, a key aspect in the context of COVID-19.

Other health instruments calibrated by the OTNH are autoclave disinfection equipment and other support equipment in compressors, dental clinic chairs, boilers, etc.

Usually, the doctor takes data for the diagnosis such as blood pressure, weight, temperature, heart and respiratory rate, among others. The variability with respect to the real health conditions of the patient can reflect incorrect information, which influences the wrong decision making and the quality of life of the people.

“The magnitude of Electricity is also of great importance in health because we guarantee the traceability of the equipment used by the technical staff of electromedicine. In this stage of the pandemic, it is essential to monitor the mechanical properties (both static and dynamic) of the respiratory system, essential for making the pertinent therapeutic decisions”, explained José Andrés Zaldívar Chacón, director of the OTNH.

In Cuba, verification and calibration in the health system is provided by the National Metrology Service (SENAMET), and reaches an annual average of 80 thousand measuring instruments, such as sphygmomanometers, thermometers, manometers, colorimeters, blood pressure meters, conductivity meters, photocolorimeters and optical spectrophotometers, among others.
