Holguín prioritizes advanced training in neonatal hemodynamics

The Neonatology Department at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Teaching University Hospital prioritizes the professional development of its staff in neonatal hemodynamics, an essential discipline for the care of this vulnerable patient population.

 Ana Nastia Tamayo, head of that department at the healthcare institution, told the ACN that this tool allows for monitoring the vascular behavior of newborns, a decisive factor in their development.

She noted that patients with intrauterine growth restriction admitted to that department have a vascular system adapted to chronic hipoxia.

She explained that this condition causes a redistribution of blood flow, affecting vital organs like the intestines or kidneys while prioritizing blood supply to the brain; therefore, constant monitoring is required to improve infant survival.

Tamayo pointed out that expertise in this field allows doctors to tailor therapies to each case and mitigate kidney damage.

To this end, premature newborns in the skin-to-skin care unit regularly undergo ultrasounds to check the condition of their organs and ensure proper distribution of oxygen and nutrients.

The Neonatology Department provides these services free of charge in Cuba, offering an opportunity to improve the quality of life for preterm infants through individualized care, a key objective of the Maternal and Child Care Program. (Source: ACN)
