The health system in the province of Holguín strengthens epidemiological surveillance in vulnerable communities with the aim to prevent the proliferation of diseases common in the summer months.
During this period of the year, it increases the incidence of diseases such as dengue, caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, whose breeding places are abundant due to the intense heat and frequent rains of the season.
The main strategy is focused on reinforcing the follow-up of infants, pregnant women and children in these communities, as well as contributing to the improvement of sanitary conditions, said Luis Orlando González, deputy general director of the sector.
He pointed out among the main actions home visits and periodic clinical evaluation for the timely detection of symptoms through the Family Doctor and Nurse Program.
González added that cleaning works are carried out to increase self focal control in the business sector and homes, as well as the sanitation of common areas in multi-family buildings, although there are difficulties with the collection of solid waste.
Aedes aegypti is known to transmit dengue virus, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever virus, which was discovered by the eminent Cuban scientist Carlos Juan Finlay, in 1881. (Source: ACN)
