A Neonatal Surgery observatory operates at the Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja Pediatric Hospital in Holguín, with the aim to reduce the infant mortality rate and improve the care of surgical neonates.
The eastern province, the third most densely populated, has a center to provide care for newborns with serious and complex congenital malformations from Granma, Las Tunas, Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba and Camagüey, to which the Observatory is associated.
Manuel Trinchet, pediatrician at the institution, told ACN that this initiative responds to a government program and has the purpose of promoting research around the discipline, through protocolization.
He pointed out that doctors in medical sciences with experience in this type of surgical procedures, the heads of Neonatology of the five eastern provinces and students of the specialty participate to provide a scientific basis to the Regional Center in terms of case studies.
The doctor added that the computerization of this branch, three-dimensional prints used in surgical models and diagnoses through artificial intelligence are the results of collaboration with Spanish universities.
Trinchet explained this has allowed a better care of patients and positive results in the follow-up of newborns, from the diagnosis of the congenital malformation to the recovery phase.
Starting in 2009, by decision of the Ministry of Public Health, neonatal surgery services were regionalized in order to take advantage of human resources, monitoring and existing equipment intended for the care of this high-risk population group that requires high experience and the use of advanced technologies.
Among the malformations treated at the medical institution, are those of the lung, the digestive tract, defects of the abdominal wall, and esophageal atresia, which require immediate intervention for the survival of the children. (Source: ACN)
