Cuba: Latest Advances in Cardiology at World Meeting

The latest advances in cardiovascular health in the world will be presented today at the XXX Central American and Caribbean Congress of Cardiology and the IX Cuban Congress of the specialty, in this capital city.
 
Some 700 delegates from all continents will gather at the Havana Convention Center until Friday, including 400 Cubans, announced Dr. Eduardo Rivas Estany, president of the Cuban Society of Cardiology (SCC) and the organizing committee.
 
Rivas Estany insisted on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, considering that they are the leading cause of death and premature disability in the workforce and kill 17 million people every year on the planet.
 
In this regard, Dr. Reynaldo de la Noval, secretary of the SCC, explained that Cuba is not exempt from this reality, since 80 percent of deaths are from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, most of which are preventable with lifestyle changes.
 
The also head of the outpatient department of the Cuban Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery (ICCC) insisted on the need to do physical exercise, avoid smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyles, inadequate diets rich in carbohydrates and fats and control high blood pressure.
 
In Cardiology 2018, specialists in this and related fields will exchange experiences and update knowledge related to health promotion, prevention, medical treatment, interventionist, surgery and rehabilitation of patients with different forms of cardiovascular disease.

Rivas Estany, Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow, Head of the Department of Rehabilitation of the ICCC, announced that the event will be attended by world-renowned personalities.
 
Professor Valentín Fuster, the world's most famous cardiologist and director of the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, United States, will give the keynote address this afternoon at the opening of the conference: New frontiers in health: the heart and the brain.
 
According to the scientific programme of the event, Professor David Wood, President of the World Federation of Cardiology, will also speak on the Global Challenges for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases during the opening day.
 
To provide excellence in Cardiovascular Health is the motto of the event, which includes arrhythmias and cardiac stimulation, arterial hypertension, ischemic heart disease and valve disease, among others, and more than 300 scientific papers will be presented.
 
It also includes the joint meeting of the American College of Cardiology and the Cuban Society of Cardiology, in which specialists from both countries will discuss heart health in the region and around the world, said Rivas Estany. / ACN
