The latest advances in cardiovascular health in the world will be presented today at the XXX Central American and Caribbean Congress of Cardiology and the IX Cuban Congress of the specialty, in this capital city.

Some 700 delegates from all continents will gather at the Havana Convention Center until Friday, including 400 Cubans, announced Dr. Eduardo Rivas Estany, president of the Cuban Society of Cardiology (SCC) and the organizing committee.

Rivas Estany insisted on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, considering that they are the leading cause of death and premature disability in the workforce and kill 17 million people every year on the planet.

In this regard, Dr. Reynaldo de la Noval, secretary of the SCC, explained that Cuba is not exempt from this reality, since 80 percent of deaths are from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, most of which are preventable with lifestyle changes.

The also head of the outpatient department of the Cuban Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery (ICCC) insisted on the need to do physical exercise, avoid smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyles, inadequate diets rich in carbohydrates and fats and control high blood pressure.

In Cardiology 2018, specialists in this and related fields will exchange experiences and update knowledge related to health promotion, prevention, medical treatment, interventionist, surgery and rehabilitation of patients with different forms of cardiovascular disease.
