In their 15 years of existence, most of Cubans have benefited with their services to improve the quality of life or alleviate certain pathologies linked to the osteomeo-articular system or simply with the advice of one of the specialists linked to the system.

Since their creation in the Primary Health Care, the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Rooms (SRI, by its Spanish acronym) have extended a number of benefits to patients.

As a result of the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Program, the SRI aims to bring services closer to the Cuban population and provide health care to countless pathologies at no cost to the patient.

The rehabilitation wards were established in Cuba in 2002, with the remodeling of the units where these activities were carried and the construction of new facilities under the implementation of novel concepts of integration of the different specialties, which address disability through teamwork to develop the comprehensivel rehabilitation of the patient with physical or mental disability and its environment, of which there are no references in the world.

In the province of Holguín, this project has benefited thousands of patients from all the municipalities.

Dr. Tania Yanet Avila Cantallops, main specialist of the Rehabilitation Program in the Provincial Health Directorate said, "Today we have structures for specialized care in 60 units, distributed in 39 SRI in Primary Health Care, including three departments in polyclinics, 11 in provincial and municipal hospitals, those in six homes for the elderly and the Psychopedagogical Medical Center ".

Avila referred to the regionalized child rehabilitation service based at the pediatric hospital Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja and the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias (CIRAH), where the care provided to the patient is evident.

The doctor explained that the SRI not only provides treatment with equipment, "in these units different specialties are integrated, from medical consultations of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Natural and Traditional Medicine and departments of Podiatry, Defectology, Speech Therapy and Phoniatrics; Physical and Occupational Therapy, Therapeutic Physical Culture and Nutritional Counseling, which all together constitute multi and interdisciplinary teams, whose purpose is to work together to improve or increase the quality of life through the correct interaction of group members with each other and with others specialists, and a set of external relations that guarantee the approach to disability, which include working with organizations of the disabled. "

These centers for health manage four major disability groups: physical motor, communication and learning disorders, organ and system disorders and psychosocial and socio-labor sustems.

"Rehabilitation is aimed at responding to the main problems of health in the province, in terms of work with disability risk factors and noncommunicable chronic diseases, as a main challenge. They also provide multidisciplinary consultations of early attention, psychophysical preparation of the pregnant woman and smoking cessation, as well as care for patients who can not access the service due to geographical causes, architectural barriers or health conditions, through home care by our professionals," she said.

However, the best example of the work and results of the SRI in these 15 years is to feel the gratitude of thousands of people each day.
