"As a reward and encouragement to the people of Holguín" the surgical-clinical Hospital Lucía Íñiguez Landín of this eastern province (HQCLIL) began to provide services 24 years ago, which celebrated the date on November 28.

This important health institution developed various activities, which concluded with a cultural gala presided over by Bárbara Díaz, member of the Provincial Bureau of the Party and Yunia Pérez, deputy governor of the territory.

The framework was propitious to recognize Alejandro Batista Izquierdo and Alexis Pupo, two of the three Holguín doctors who participated in the Phase III clinical trial of the Abdala vaccine, as monitors in conducting the study carried out in the provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo.

Likewise, were awarded authors of investigations presented at the 24th Anniversary Scientific Conference, dedicated to the memory of Mr. Rodolfo Gámez Cruz, who served as Head of Nursing of the Intensive Care Unit since the inauguration of the hospital and recently died during the fulfillment of an internationalist mission.

Of the more than 70 works presented in plenary halls, nine mentions were awarded, seven outstanding and six relevant, for constituting lines of development of the institution with provincial and national scope.

Dr. Luis Manuel García Niebla, general director of HQCLIL, pointed out that the workers of this center have been protagonists of achievements and advances, despite the adversities imposed by the blockade and the pandemic, which turned them into the COVID-19 nation's largest hospital in patient care.

He recognized that the economic situation facing the hospital has limited surgical activity and transplant activity; however, the assumed alternatives, inventiveness and organization for the efficient use of resources have made it possible for emergency patients to receive timely and quality medical care.

García said that this year the maintenance and investment plans have undergone changes; however, as encouraging news, he pointed out that a neurophysiology laboratory with the most modern structure in the country is in the completion phase.

Also, the Retinitis Pigmentosa Center adjacent to the institution was inaugurated, the roof of the local excimer laser area was repaired and before the end of the year they plan to finish maintenance of the laundry, central sterilization, as well as tables and chairs in the workers' dining room.
