Anti-Polio vaccination campaign underway in Holguín

The 61st National Oral Polio Vaccination Campaign began Monday in Holguín, where some 28,796 children from one month old to two years, 11 months and 29 days will be immunized in the two phases planned.
Likewise, 11, 842 nine-year-old children in the territory will be reactivated with a dose of oral polio vaccine.
Dr. Clara Fernández, head of the Immunization Program at the Provincial Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology, reported that given the epidemiological situation in the province due to COVID-19, the necessary vaccination points will be opened in the municipalities, always under the standards established by the Immunization Program and the hygienic-sanitary measures adopted due of the pandemic.
From 1962 to 2022, 857 million 378 thousand 369 doses of oral polio vaccine have been applied in Cuba, which has guaranteed the protection of its population.
Before the triumph of the Revolution in the island, poliomyelitis was an endemic disease that each year left some 300 children suffering from paralysis after contracting this ancestral disease, which is estimated to have begun to affect the world more than three thousand years ago.
