riñonSince 2016, the World Kidney Day is celebrated each year throughout the world on the second Thursday of March, as initiative of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF), aimed at promoting renal health, starting from of prevention.

These associations aim, on this occasion, to raise awareness on the impact of kidney complications, mainly in the population at risk, mainly in patients suffering from diabetes, hypertension, obesity, glomerulopathies, infections and renal cysts and prostate problems, among others.

In this regard, Dr. Arturo Arjona Torres, president of the Scientific Society of Nephrology in Holguin, stressed the need to raise awareness among people about the prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) that affects the 10 percent of the world's population, of which 2.6 million patients received dialysis in 2010, a figure that would reach the 5.4 percent by 2030.

Dr. Arjona explained that “chronic diseases constitute a true incidence and prevalence, not only in developed countries, but also in those that advance towards development, and kidney chronic diseases (ERC) occupy an important place among them.”

"We are currently facing a increasing and alarming rate of patients with progressive CKD, due to the high aging of society, coupled with the increase of patients with Arterial Hypertension (HBP), Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and other risk factors for the CKD. "

He noted that prevention and control of these risk factors can warn the beginning of this problem and with an early diagnosis and treatment the progression of this disease can be slowed down and improve the quality of life in patients.

Arjona acknowledged that Cuba marks the date with remarkable progress, based on the prevention of kidney diseases, dialysis methods and transplant activity. "The lives saved every day is the award for the progress of the Nephrology services in our country, through almost fifty units of dialysis and a dozen kidney transplant centers that bring patients closer to the treatments".

When referring to the province, he said that the specialty of Nephrology is still young, as it started in 1981 with an outpatient service and admission room in the Vladimir Ilich Lenin provincial hospital, where it was then necessary to open a small room for peritoneal dialysis from the increase of patients with kidney damage.

"The first substitute treatments with artificial systems began in 1983, with technology donated by the former USSR, but it was not until '87 when two artificial kidneys (RA) Retomed, manufactured in Santiago de Cuba, came into operation, which together with the increase in health personnel is created the Hemodialysis service, with three Gambro AKA-10 machines, " he explained.

Currently, the province has 46 RA in five dialysis centers of the provincial hospitals Vladimir I. Lenin and Lucía Iñiguez Landín and in the municipalities of Moa, Mayarí and Banes, where hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are performed on more than 250 patients.

He noted that "Nephrology in Holguin is supported by more than 30 specialist doctors, 75 nursing graduates and a large group of workers, who provide medical assistance with professionalism”.
