Mayarí, the largest municipality in Holguín, has a comprehensive development program. There, the son music is exclusively performed in the national festival of the genre held each year. It also boasts the Los Planos Inclinados (Inclined Planes), a marvel of iron engineering and the Salto del Guayabo, one of its natural attractions.
This October 27, Mayarí had the special visit of the 10th International Solidarity Art Brigade "Maps of the soul have no borders," the jazz player Leon Quince Allen and the Bamboo Bike project, both from the United States, and the Mónik Dance Flamenco Company.
"La Guantanamera", performed by the Municipal Concert Band, received the young musician Leon, who then played two solos with the trumpet. The bass, the electric guitar, the percussion, the flute and the saxophone were then added to interpret Benny's music.
Leon said that this is his second trip to Cuba, but it has been more special than the previous one, because he has had much more interaction with the people.
The percussionist of the Band, Ramón García, described the exchange as magnificent: "It has been an honor to share with him. It was a challenge and at the same time a learning. It feels the influence of jazz and blues in the music he performs, but he's very good at playing Cuban music.”
Leon has been researching for many years the Cuban culture, which he considers one of the largest in the world.
"I had the opportunity to meet Cuban musicians in Chicago when I was very young and that changed my life. Although I was born and raised in the United States, I feel as Cuban as you, "he said.
The jazz player takes pleasure in coming to the Ibero-American Culture Festival, because in his opinion, the city of Holguín, Mayarí, Bariay, Guardalavaca is the real Cuba.
The people of Mayarí also enjoyed the presentation of a bamboo bicycle, designed by the American Craig Calfee, but made with the most resistant Cuban cane.
The artistic day ended with the presentation of the Mónik Dance Company at the Culture Center of the town. As a fertile land of culture, the farewell was in charge of the local talent of the territory.
