Luis Yuseff Reyes, director of Ediciones La Luz, a publishing house of the Hermanos Saíz Association in Holguín and part of the Territorial Publishing System, spoke with the Granma newspaper about the 17 new literary works presented in various formats at the 34th Havana International Book Fair in 2026, which will continue its journey throughout the country.

Although every title in its catalogue has a printed edition, print runs are small and do not meet reader demand. Yuseff Reyes credited the ability to keep producing physical books to the joint efforts of the AHS, the publishing house’s creative team, and the Lugones Printing House, which works under difficult conditions.

The publisher aims to establish e-books and audiobooks as genuine reading alternatives, rather than merely responses to paper shortages or economic difficulties. Its goal is for each reader to be free to choose the format in which they prefer to access a work.

Ediciones La Luz’s initiatives include the Celestino Short Story Prize, which has existed for 27 years, and the New Voices in Poetry Competition. Both contests reinforce its commitment to literary creation, especially to promoting young Cuban writers.

Its catalogue has featured renowned figures such as Delfín Prats, María Elena Llana, Miguel Barnet, and Lina de Feria, but its central mission remains supporting new generations. For this purpose, it created the Abrirse las constelaciones collection for authors up to 35 years old, while also including universal classics through the Cuban Book Institute’s People’s Library series.

After more than two decades leading the institution, Luis Yuseff sees Ediciones La Luz as a multifunctional cultural space, with book presentations, an art gallery, the Celestino bookstore, and activities linked to the Romerías de Mayo festival. At FILH 2026, it received two La Puerta de Papel awards for El brillo de la superficie by Delfín Prats and El libro discontinuo by Lourdes González Herrero. (Source: Radio Angulo)
