The National Assembly (parliament) of Ecuador has maintained its staunch decision to protect children and adolescents through a new instrument, a national registry of sexual aggressors and rapists.

Framed in the struggle to curb those crimes in such a sensitive sector of society, the initiative aims to become a powerful instrument to prevent that those who have committed sexual crimes work in activities directly related to minors.

With unanimous support, the National Assembly approved at the first debate the draft bill to create the National Registry of Rapists, Sexual Abusers and Aggressors of Boys, Girls and Adolescents.

The new instrument will identify the perpetrators, prevent their contact with those vulnerable groups and give them the punishment they deserve.

For many, the approval of the draft bill into a law has an urgent nature and is an indispensable step that can also contribute to reducing the number of reoffenders.

The registry will be managed by the Ministry of the Interior and will be reserved. However, people who want to work with minors will have to request a certificate stating that they are not on the list.

Countries like Uruguay, Argentina, El Salvador, Canada, Australia, Colombia, Chile and the United States have similar registries. / PL
