Cuban and Spanish foreign ministers described as a historic moment in the relationship between the two countries the official visit of the Spain´s monarchs next November, the first of its kind to Cuba.

In a press release after the talks, Josep Borrell, Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, confirmed the presence of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia as part of the festivities for the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana.

Bruno Rodriguez, Cuba's Minister of Foreign Affairs, said the royal visit will be a significant contribution to relations between Havana and Madrid and the monarchs will receive the warm welcome and hospitality of all Cubans.

Borrell's presence in Havana is part of the ongoing agreements signed bilaterally during PM Pedro Sanchez's visit to Cuba in November 2018, and on this occasion issues of common interest were assessed, such as economic cooperation, the international agenda, the impact of the tightening of the U.S. blockade against Cuba and the recent measures taken by the Cuban government to boost its economy.

Both countries have maintained uninterrupted diplomatic relations since 1902 and there is a will to continue expanding them in tourism, renewable energy sources and the agrifood sector, among others, said Rodriguez, who thanked the Spanish government's opposition to the tightening of the extraterritoriality of the blockade.

Currently, Spain is Cuba's third commercial partner and the main one in Europe, as evidenced by its massive participation in the latest editions of the Havana International Fair, in which it has been the most represented country. / ACN
