Cuba is determined to develop food production, promote the growth of exports and facilitate foreign investments for the benefit of the domestic economy, said the head of the Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment Ministry Rodrigo Malmierca.

Malmierca presented business opportunities to the group of U.S. farmer’s executives who participated in the 3rd Cuba-U.S. Agricultural Business Conference, reported the agency's website.

During the exchange, Malmierca gave an update on the complex scenario of the Cuban economy and explained that beyond the consequences of the U.S. blockade, the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, and the conflict in Ukraine are factors that are strongly affecting the island.

Despite these adversities, he stressed that the country is implementing an economic strategy aligned with the 2030 Development Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals. It is working on eliminating obstacles in negotiations and attracting foreign capital investments.

Another of the measures implemented is the diversification of new economic actors with the authorization of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and non-agricultural cooperatives, and their effective linkage with the socialist state enterprise highlighted the Foreign Trade minister.

Malmierca also provided information on the updating of investment policies in the agri-food sector as an opportunity to introduce new business proposals with very attractive projects.

In this regard, he mentioned that fresh products such as fruits and vegetables are goods that can be easily exported to the U.S. market and seafood, tobacco, rum, and charcoal.

Malmierca ratified Cuba's willingness to develop relations with the U.S. government based on respect for national sovereignty and promote beneficial trade links for both nations and reaffirmed that the economic, commercial, and financial blockade hinders progress towards that goal.
