Cuban Universities Win International Awards

PremioUniverisadesCubanasPhoto: Prensa LatinaThree Cuban universities, two from the central provinces of Camagüey and Las Villas, and that of Havana, won the international prizes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2018 and the Ibero-American Association of Postgraduate Universities (AUIP), academic and diplomatic sources stated today.
 
Houlin Zhao, Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union, announced the Higher Studies Center in Camagüey for among those prizewinners, for recognizing the successes achieved by the States in the implementation of the commitments made at the World Summit on the Information Society of the United Nations, held in two phases in 2003 and 2005.
 
That Cuban university was awarded in the 'Champions' category referred to education, with a project focused on the need to raise awareness about the treasured heritage of that central Cuban city, declared a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage in 2008.
The initiative consists of an Internet platform that provides diverse information to visitors about the city, for which modern educational technologies, such as Augmented Reality, are implemented.
 
The 'Marta Abreu' Central University received the Ibero-American Quality Award for a sixth consecutive year, conferred by the Ibero-American Association of Postgraduate Universities (AUIP).
 
This time, the distinctions conferred during the 9th AUIP award for Postgraduate Quality in Ibero-America went to the doctorate in Pedagogical Sciences and Chemical Engineering, well-known Villa Clara educator, Aida Maria Torres, said over the phone to Prensa Latina from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.
 
Torres also stressed that another of those awards corresponded to the advanced training program 'Doctorate in Legal Sciences', from the University of Havana.
 
The AUIP (1987) is an international non-governmental organization with UN endorsement, domiciled in the Spanish city of Salamanca, Castilla Leon, which currently conforms more than 220 higher education institutions in Spain, Portugal and Latin America and directs its efforts to improve academic proposals and stimulate its qualitative improvement, according to the information media.
 
The awarding ceremony took place during the General Assembly of the organization, which will conclude tomorrow and is led by Eduardo González Mazo, Rector of the University of Cádiz, current AUIP president, she said. / PL
