Seismologists in Cuba today closely follow the behavior of the telluric movements in the northern Caribbean, where an upsurge is registered from the Virgin Islands to the eastern end of the archipelago.
According to specialists Enrique Arango and Bladimir Moreno, from the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), this situation has been reported since the onset of the year and is related to the northern fault of Hispaniola and its continuity in the Puerto Rico Trench.
To better appreciate that telluric activity, a database has been compiled from the catalogs of the Seismological Network of Puerto Rico, the Loyola Seismological Observatory of the Dominican Republic and the National Seismological Service of Cuba, the experts explained.
As a result, a unified map was drawn up covering the entire northern Caribbean, with the earthquakes recorded from January 1 to February 11, 2021, in a work that will be completed at intervals further, the specialists added.
Arango and Moreno stressed the importance of those analyses because strong earthquakes may occur in the northern Caribbean with the potential to cause tsunamis, with danger for the north of the Greater Antilles and to a lesser degree for Cuba.
