Photovoltaic project benefits communities in the Turquino Plan of Holguín

Dozens of homes in La Melba, an isolated community in the Turquino Plan of Holguín, are receiving energy through photovoltaic systems installed as part of a cooperation project between Cuba and Canada focused on women's leadership in clean energy.
The program, called Strengthening Women's Leadership and Participation in the Renewable Energy Sector in Cuba (Former), promotes the electrification of homes, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities in hard-to-reach areas using renewable energy sources.
The director of the Renewable Sources Basic Business Unit (UEB), Fernando Hechavarría Pupo, published on the social media of the Electric Company, that this mountainous community, in the municipality of Moa, is among those benefiting most from the development of technological capabilities. So far, more than 50 solar panel systems have been installed, benefiting over 80 families.
In that community, the installation of 96 systems with capacities between one and two kilowatts (kW), depending on demand, is planned. The solutions include local installations, solar pumping, public lighting, and the replacement of the generator, he emphasized.
The project also includes the installation of 140 systems in other municipalities, including Banes, Gibara, Cueto, and Frank País, targeting homes with broken or awaiting installation, he commented.
To date, Former has delivered more than 500 pieces of equipment, including solar panels and water heaters, to centers such as the Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja Provincial Pediatric Hospital, the Juan Manuel Páez Polyclinic, and the Guillermo Luis Fernández Hernández-Baquero General Teaching Hospital, the latter two located in Moa.
In the education sector, beneficiaries include preschools, the Dr. Antonio Núñez Jiménez University of Moa (with the installation of a demonstration solar park), and the opening of specialized classrooms at the Luis de Feria Garayalde and José Antonio Boizán polytechnic schools.
This initiative, a result of cooperation between Cuba and Canada, is now in its final stage of implementation and contributes to the empowerment of women by promoting their economic autonomy and social leadership. (Source: ACN)
