In 2026, the province of Holguín has eight entities nominated for the National Award for the eradication of ozone-depleting substances, which places this eastern territory among the country's leading provinces in this field.
These companies are implementing environmentally friendly technologies and replacing refrigerant gases that are highly harmful to Earth's protective shield, Norkys Ochoa Aguilera, head of the provincial ozone layer protection program, told the Cuban News Agency.
She highlighted the nominees: the Lidio Ramón Pérez Thermoelectric Power Plant in Felton; the Frank País Telecommunications Center (Etecsa); the Palmares Non-Hotel Services Branch; the Hotel Club Amigo Atlántico Guardalavaca; the Holguín Engineering and Design Services Company (Vértice); the Hotel Gran Muthu Ensenada; Gaviota Oriente; and Villa El Bosque—the eight local entities vying for the recognition.
She noted that the award is presented every September 16, the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, to organizations that excel in this area, a field in which Holguín has achieved positive results over the years.
In 2026, the central theme, "Global action for a cooler planet", highlights the importance of joining forces to tackle climate change through more sustainable and efficient cooling solutions.
The date was established by the United Nations to raise global public awareness of this issue and to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty created for that purpose. (Source: ACN)
