The Nutrivida project, led by the World Food Programme (WFP) with support from the Government of Canada and UNICEF, seeks to improve maternal and child well-being in Cuba by expanding access to diverse, nutritious, high-quality foods.
The initiative is being implemented particularly in the provinces of Holguín and Mayabeque.
Its main goal is to improve the nutritional status of vulnerable populations and prevent or reduce anemia. It targets children up to age 11, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers in municipalities such as Mayarí, Moa, and Holguín in eastern Cuba, as well as Santa Cruz, Bejucal, and San José de las Lajas in the western part of the country.
Nutrivida also aims to strengthen local food systems and connect producers with social protection networks. In this way, it not only supports the distribution of food and supplies but also promotes local structures better able to sustain nutritional support for beneficiary families.
The project is based on scientific evidence and includes a baseline study to assess the initial nutritional and psychological condition of the people served. Local teams are being trained to measure anemia and anthropometric indicators—including weight, height, and body mass index—which will later be used to evaluate the program’s results.
So far, municipal coordination teams have been established, monitoring of food and supply distribution has been organized, and prenatal and nutritional supplements—including powdered micronutrients for children under two—have been purchased.
These efforts are part of the WFP’s broader strategy in Cuba to strengthen food security, agroecological resilience, and social protection in vulnerable situations and during climate-related disasters.
