The addition of 10 electric vehicles in Holguín has improved transportation for patients undergoing hemodialysis to hospitals in the provincial capital and surrounding areas.

The Dongfeng electric cars, acquired with development funds from the Ministry of Transportation, is intended to guarantee comfortable transportation for people with kidney failure, said Joel Rodríguez Vázquez, director of the Taxi Agency in the province.

With an electric driving range of over 250 miles, the cars will benefit the patients treated at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Hospital and the Lucía Íñiguez Landín Clinical-Surgical Hospital, as well as support care at other centers, including the one in the municipality of Rafael Freyre, he explained.

The service operates with a first shift that begins with pickups at 7:30 a.m. and a second one at 10:00 a.m.; each vehicle will transport two patients and two companions free of charge.

Rodríguez Vázquez noted that, during the interval between the scheduled trips, the cars will cover a route for the general public, connecting the three main medical institutions in the province.

These units constitute the first delivery of a total of 20 assigned to Holguín; the remaining ones will be minibuses destined for public passenger transport.

He added that in a new phase of the project, they plan to install 144 solar panels at the facility, a process currently underway, aimed at ensuring autonomy from the National Electric System and maintaining service even under adverse conditions.

The Ministry of Transport is promoting the change in the energy matrix through the purchase of 200 units distributed throughout the country, including the provinces of Isla de la Juventud, Havana, Granma and Guantánamo. (Source: ACN)
