The government plan for the prevention of risks, criminal acts and illegal activities affecting natural resources is contributing to reducing infractions in this area in the province of Holguín through a series of environmental training and education initiatives.

Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, sub-delegate of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) told ACN that initiatives are being developed to achieve this purpose, such as the conservation of critically endangered species in the Nipe Mountain Range through the dissemination of its natural values among adolescents and young people.

In addition, tours and themed settings were set up in the Botanical Garden to raise awareness among students and the general public about the rational use of native resources, he explained.

At this institution, located in the Valle de Mayabe, ornamental plants are also commercialized as substitutes for native and endemic species illegally extracted from their habitat.

He specified that a group of experts from Citma has also been participating since 2024 in training the technical staff of the Gibara Natural History Museum regarding illegal bird trafficking, and of the province's regulatory authorities on the classification of confiscated funds.

In this regard, the director noted, training courses are offered to researchers, members of the Forest Ranger Corps, and students of Forestry Engineering and Agronomy on these topics.

Initiatives also include the media coverage of educational and audiovisual materials about the Mensura-Piloto National Park, the Nipe-Cristal Biological Corridor and Bahía de Naranjo, representative of native varieties.

Since the approval of the new legal regulations for environmental protection and animal welfare, strategies have been implemented in Holguín for their application in conjunction with sectors such as education and agricultura, among others.  (Source: ACN)
