cultura italiana Casa Ibero 1

The Casa de Iberoamérica hosted the first meeting of the community of natives and descendants of Italian origin in Holguín, as a way of contributing to the cultural rapprochement between the peoples of the world.

After several years of work and collaboration, it was born the project "Socialization of knowledge" with the aim to integrate the culture and tradition of Cuba and Italy.

Barbara Martínez Pupo, a member of the Department of communication of this cultural institution said that before the meeting, there was a precedent of publishing the surnames originating in that country, so that people who did not know they had Italian ancestry could attend and be part of the community.

Through investigations carried out throughout history, it is known that there was only a small Italian colony in Cuba in the middle of the 19th century; its members were mainly men of culture, architects, artists, painters and engineers, who worked to beautify buildings and monuments.

The meeting was attended by the Italian journalist Nicolás Birone, who expressed that there are "future plans to strengthen ties."

Birone added that the community of Italians descendants will be formed just like the Hispanic-Cuban communities, to unite the peoples through culture, without political or economic interests, only for the purpose of learning and exchanging knowledge, which will be included in his book “An American dream” to be presented on July 12 at Casa de Iberoamérica.
