The current government of Panama, with businessman Ricardo Martinelli in power, has abruptly and unilaterally decided to put an end to the eye-care cooperation agreement with Cuba internationally known as Operation Milagro. The main objective of the program, which exists in a number of countries around the region, is to restore and/or improve people’s eyesight, with totally free operations. It is designed for people with very limited economic resources.

South African writer Nadine Gordimer recently added her voice to those throughout the world who condemn the existence of the Guantánamo Naval Base, located in Cuba and illegally occupied by the United States for more than a century, in an open aggression against the island's sovereignty.
