Treatment for Peanut Allergy Developed in Britain PDF Print E-mail
By PL / redaccion@ahora.cu / Wednesday, 24 February 2010 15:19

A therapy for peanut allergy could be ready within a few years, British scientists reported today.

Researchers at Addenbrooke Hospital in Cambridge, will conduct a clinical trial involving 104 children to test a new treatment called desensitization therapy to prevent allergic reaction to that food.

Participants will consume increasing doses of that grain in dust, yogurt made from a one-milligram dose to five peanuts each day.

People who can not tolerate the food may suffer from itching or anaphylactic shock, severe inflammatory reaction that causes death in many cases.

An earlier study involving 23 people had encouraging results, since 20 of them managed to eat up to 30 peanuts without developing any sensibility.

Scientists hope that this therapy will also help to develop tolerance for other foods that produce allergies and recommend that parents do not follow this procedure with their children without medical guidance.
