James Cockcroft Attends 5th Colloquium on the Cuban Five

The American writer James Cockroft attended the 5th Coloquium for the liberation of the Cuban Five held in the eastern Cuban province of Holguin.
According to Cockroft, the intellectual movement of the United States and Canada does not have as much influence as in "Nuestra América."

"I write more in Spanish than in English, as people from other parts of the world read more about me than in my own country. And our alternative media are not strong enough to let influential actors and actresses in Hollywood who support the Cuban Five speak, "James said.

"We have 59 MPs calling for the immediate release of the Cuban Five along with the entire National Assembly of Quebec. Also, the regional social forum voted unanimously for the cause and the end of the blockade against Cuba. Last April we held a festival of poetry and resistance honoring Gerardo, René, Antonio, Ramon and Fernando," he expressed.

"We look for new ideas to break the silence around the case of the Five and create much more offensive in the altrnative media. Besides, it is necessary to increase acts of civil disobedience against the White House, popular demonstrations throughout the country to demand the release of the Cuban Five and to stress resistance like that of the communities in Honduras and the seven military bases in Colombia. We intend to create a basis for peace in the Latino communities of Quebec.

"I think that through all these efforts we have achieved some level of hope to accelerate and intensify the struggle both in America and in our International Committee.

"The U.S. government has had to acknowledge the failure of its policies, not only to the Cuban people and the Cuban Revolution-- with its isolation in the UN in the last elections of the Assembly-- but also in the specific case of the Cuban Five with the resentencing of sentences of these heroes, for it means, in their own words, to rectify an injustice, of course. So we have gained some ground, though we know that not in the legal aspect, but in the political battle in Congress, in Washington, in U.S. streets and in Latin America, Japan, in short, the representation of the whole world at the symposium.
