Ibero-American Cultural Festival Begins in Holguin PDF Print E-mail

The 16th Ibero-American cultural festival began on Saturday in the eastern Cuban province of Holguin. The opening gala was attended by top officials of the Communist Party of Cuba and the local government, and more than 100 foreign delegates from 15 countries and 400 Cuban delegates.

The opening gala was in the hands of the Eco flamenco company, the Savarez duo, the D 'Akokan Folkloric Dance Company, the Holguin choral society, poets Emiliano Sardinas and Felipe Pérez, and singer-songwriter Eduardo Sosa.

Tatiana Zuniga, director of the institution that organizes the event along with the Holguin Department of Culture, officially opened the event with words from writer Eduardo Galeano, "The maps of the soul have no borders."

Participants at this year´s event will share experiences with locals whose lives were drastically changed after Hurricane Ike ravaged the territory last year.

The Organizing Committee extended this year´s festival to the municipality of Frai Benito, a town near Bariay, were the festival first took place in 1993.
