Holguin Boosts Rabbit-Breeding PDF Print E-mail

Although in Cuba the production of rabbit meat is not even close to that of the major producing countries, such as China and Italy, a growing rabbit-breeding movement is expanding throughout the country. The production of this type of meat in the island, mainly aimed at supplying the tourism industry, replace imports of this highly nutritious food.

According to Marlon Calzadilla, provincial director of the Livestock Enterprise in Holguin, entity in charge of contracting and marketing food, more than 280 local farmers are involved in rabbit-breeding. Farmers have foreseen to produce more than 40 tons of live rabbits before the end of this year.

Calzadilla said that after experiencing a growth in production rates, the province is currently working on boosting rabbit-breeding. To this end, a strategy that reaches all producers has been devised.

“We have been working hard to increase specialized care services for producers involved in breeding. They were also leased land in usufruct to plant food for the young rabbits. We have improved breeding species, and complied with the contracting and marketing agreements,” Calzadilla said.

The province of Holguin is the fourth major producer of rabbit meat in the country after Villa Clara, Havana and Matanzas. The municipalities of Holguin, Banes, Calixto Garcia and Gibara lead the production of rabbit meat in the region. / RA
