The agenda of the Organization of United Nations Food and Agriculture's forum (FAO) began discussion on Monday and continues today at the technical level, to later give way to the high-level segment (April 28-30)
FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf will be in charge of the event's opening which will also focus on familiar agriculture and climate change.
José Graziano da Silva, FAO's regional representative for Latin America, said the event provides "a special area dedicated to design a new agenda to promote rural development".
"That strategy requires that national policies and programs are articulated and coordinated with regional strategies to face common problems".
FAO's figures state there are 53 million people affected by malnutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean, similar to the amount in the period 1990-1992.
This means a step backwards regarding the mid-2000s when this indicator stood at 45 million people.
As part of the initiatives, civil society organizations complete details of a joint declaration to be offered to the 31st Conference. / PL
