With the presence of Idianelys Santillana and Chaney Govin, members of the Management Group of the National Center for the Study of Youth, the Third Edition of the Competition “Construyendo Esperanzas” (Building Hope) was developed during the night of Thursday March 18, at the School of Art Instructors in the city of Holguin. The gala was developed and attended by students from the educational center, who conducted their artistic talent towards the prevention and education related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

This event is held for the third time and has had as previous sites the West and the Center of the Island. It stretches over several days, since the members of the Management Group must be present in each of the provinces to serve as jurors from the perspective of how the works address the issue of the HIV.

The idea came in 2002 for a proposed project on HIV in Cuba by the Global Fund. According to Idianelys Santillana, the Center for Youth Studies suggested working with Social Workers, and because of the positive impact of this initiative, "we were given the opportunity to start another project and decided to do it with one of the Programs of the Revolution." This time, they aimed at the art instructors to "use their artistic skills, and cultivate their creativity and their empowerment by suggesting the topic of HIV."

The works should be directed to AIDS, myths surrounding HIV and surrounding homosexuality. Besides, they should handle concepts such as HIV, AIDS and others.

The impact in previous editions has been very positive. Santillana stated that they "were beyond our expectations. As a center of studies it was a challenge and something very new for us to complete this project. For schools on the other hand, from the perspective of the very teachers and managers, it has been vital. This has been an opportunity for students to create beyond their lessons and their role as art instructors. Furthermore, it becomes a movement of the whole school, and gives students another area of competition - because they do not have many."

The rest of the jury consisted of members of the Provincial Council of Cultural Yanara Cespedes, who served as a juror of dance, Carlos Mr. Bonaga (literature and theater), Alfredo Escobar, (theater) and Roberto Maranje (theater). The works should have artistic quality, but also had to deal with the proposed themes adequately.

The winners of the edition in Holguin participate in the Regional Festival “Coloreando la Vida” (Coloring Life) to be held next June and bringing together the winners of the five eastern provinces.
