5th International Colloquium on the Cuban Five in Holguin, Cuba

Preparations are in full swing in the eastern Cuban province of Holguin to host, next November, the 5th International Coloquium for the Freedom of the Cuban Five and against Terrorism.

The event, considered, the first one of its kind to be held on the island, will demand the release of Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino, internationally known as the Cuban Five.

The five men, Heroes of the Republic of Cuba, were arrested in 1998 and submitted to a biased trial in the US city of Miami for charges that were not proven. However, the Five were given extremely long and unfair sentences including life terms.

The Cuban Five infiltrated and collected information on US-based ultra-right groups that have undertaken terrorist actions against the Cuban people over the past 50 years.

Cuban Friendship Institute delegate in Holguin, Amaury Torno Gonzalez said that 156 friends of Cuba, from 27 countries, have already confirmed their attendance, along with 30 foreign youths studying in Cuba.

Among the personalities attending the event, slated to take place November 19 - 23, are the Cuban Five defense attorney Rafael Anglada, US writer Alice Walker, filmmaker Saul Landau and pacifist Cindy Sheehan.

Torno explained that high on the event´s agenda are solidarity encounters, a meeting with relatives of the Cuban Five, a workshop against terrorism at the Holguin locality of Boca de Samá, a fishermen community that was the target of a terrorist attack that killed and wounded several people.

An On-Line Forum has also been scheduled by members of the local club of the Cuban Union of Journalists (UPEC) as part of their actions to spread the truth of the Cuban Five case through the Holguin media.
