Honduran Resistance Front Announces Referendum on Constituent Assembly PDF Print E-mail
By Juventud Rebelde / redaccion@ahora.cu / Wednesday, 10 March 2010 15:55

The referendum will take place on June 28, on the date that marks the first anniversary of the coup d’etat against President Manuel Zelaya. The National Resistance Front of the People of Honduras (FNRP) announced that they will conduct a referendum on the necessity of a Constituent Assembly and also summoned the public to take part in the Gathering for the Re-foundation of Honduras, which will take place in the city of La Esperanza, from March 12 to 14.

In a communiqué, the front said that the referendum will take place on June 28, which marks the first anniversary of the coup d’etat against President Manuel Zelaya.

Supported by traditional parties, powerful companies and the Church, the coup prevented a referendum that would be conducted on June 28, 2009 for the people to approve or not a constituent assembly.

Now the main point on the FNRP’s agenda is the necessity of a new Constitution.

The document points out that a Constituent Assembly would be the expression of the inviolable will of the people to build a true democratic country and transform the unfair and repressive system imposed by the oligarchy.

The front didn’t give further details on how will this referendum be conducted. According to the communiqué, they will continue to make arrangements at the meeting in La Esperanza.

The Front argues that the 1982 Constitution shouldn’t be valid, since it was passed by a dictatorial government.
