In 2025, Holguín had an outstanding sports year, with achievements that stood out nationally and internationally. The province reemerged on the competitive scene, excelling in team sports, regaining prominence in baseball, and celebrating major medals in global events. Overall, the results showed a strong and growing sports movement in Holguín.
The Sultanes of Holguín achieved the best runner-up finish in their municipality’s history in the National Baseball Club Championship. After a controversial game due to an opponent’s illegal lineup, which gave them a pass to the finals, the team won their quarterfinal and semifinal matchups but lost two close games to the Lobos of Pinar del Río in the championship. This result reaffirmed Holguín’s capacity to compete at the national level, becoming the fourth provincial team to reach a national final, with three silver medals and one title in its record.
Holguín’s women’s softball team also earned recognition by placing third in the national championship, regaining the province’s prominence in a discipline that has traditionally been competitive for the region. This bronze medal reflected sustained growth and marked Holguín’s return to the national podium after several years of absence.
The National Baseball Series delivered one of the most emotional moments of the year: the Holguín Cachorros surprised fans by qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in 16 years. Their joyful, dynamic, and spirited style of play, supported by a passionate crowd that filled Calixto García Stadium, restored identity and pride to Holguín baseball and showed the team’s potential for long-term success.
On the international stage, individual athletes such as taekwondo fighter Marlyn Pérez, boxer Jorge Soto, and triple jumper Andy Hechavarría represented Holguín in world championships. Although they did not reach the podium, their participation demonstrated the local talent and the province’s continuing path toward elite competition. Additionally, para-athlete Ulicer Aguilera stood out by winning a silver medal at the World Championship in New Delhi and setting a continental record, strengthening Holguín’s reputation in adaptive sports and its presence in top-level events.
