Caribbean Islands Prepare for Incoming Hurricane Irma

irma-trayectoria-lunes.jpgThe Caribbean islands located on the path of Hurricane Irma, which has already strengthened into a Category 5 storm, are preparing to face strong winds, rains and tidal waves, according to local media.

During their preparations for the storm, States of Emergency were declared in Puerto Rico and activated the National Guard.

Puerto Rico, with about 3.4 million inhabitants, set up 456 emergency shelters to shelter up to 62,100 people.

Puerto Rico´s authorities also froze commodity prices, such as drinking water, medicines, electric generators and batteries.

In nations where Irma's passage is already imminent, such as the Leeward Islands, or the British Virgin Islands, some warnings have been issued to face Irma´s 280-kph winds.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services said the hurricane is expected to have strong winds and generates heavy rains and huge waves.

Schools in the region have been ordered to close since Monday, and some Caribbean islands are under state of alert, such as Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Martin, Saba, Saint Eustatius, Saint Martin and Saint Bartholomew.

According to the National Hurricane Center (CNH), Irma is heading the Leeward Islands, where preparations must be sped up. / PL
