Volcano in El Salvador will Be Climbed in Support for the Cuban Five

cincosalvador.jpgMembers of solidarity organizations from El Salvador are planning to climb this Sunday a symbolic volcano in the border with Guatemala in support of the freedom struggle for the Cuban Five, unjustly imprisoned in American jails.

The Salvadoran Coordinator of Solidarity with Cuba reported that the demonstration is part of the actions within the World Day 5 for The Cuban Five —as these fighters are known— and is another effort to denounce the injustice committed against them for more than 13 years, reported Prensa Latina.

The activity is organized by the Committee of the City of Chalchuapa, located in the department of Santa Ana and about 80 miles west of San Salvador, the country’s capital.

Participants will ascend the volcano El Chingo, a summit of 1775 meters above sea level, whose slopes are shared by El Salvador and Guatemala.

Attendants will meet at the central park Chalchuapa and then be sent to the village of San Isidro, of the Canton el Taque, where the ascent will start, it is estimated to last about four hours.

Across the border line, El Chingo includes the Guatemalan municipalities Atescatepeque and Jerez, of the Jutiapa department, and its top is a monument that marks the border between the two nations.

Published online descriptions explain that the volcano is a shapely cone, of which there is no recorded eruptions in recent centuries and that, therefore, was known for a long time as Cerro Chingo.
