Raul Castro Sends Flower Wreath to Funeral of Outstanding Journalist

molto-ofrenda.jpgCuban President Raúl Castro today sent a wreath to the funeral of Antonio Moltó Martorell, head of the National Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC), who died the day before of cancer in Havana.

With more than 50 years of work, Moltó stood out for his professionalism and revolutionary spirit, qualities that contributed to gain the respect, sympathy and affection of his colleagues.

Before the triumph of the Revolution in 1959 he collaborated with the 26 de Julio Movement, participated in different demonstrations and protests in his native city of Santiago de Cuba, including the popular mobilization which became the funeral of the young martyr Frank País and the April strike of 1958.

A founding member of the Association of Young Rebels and other organizations such as the Revolutionary National Militias, the Cuban Workers' Confederation and the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, Moltó joined UPEC in 1967, where he held the presidency during the last four years.

His outstanding professional career was in different media, and particularly in Radio Rebelde.

According to a statement published by the digital site Cubaperiodista.cu, he excelled in his work as the head of the UPEC, an organization in which he spared no effort, even at the expense of his health and his time, to keep unity, and professionalism of the guild , its ethical performance and the dignification of the work of the media.

He was awarded with the José Martí National Journalism Prize for the work of life time, the National Radio Award and the Replica of the Machete of Generalissimo Máximo Gómez. / PL
