Cuban Govt. Rallies Popular Support for anti-dengue Campaign

logo-dengue-250x250.gifThe Cuban Public Health Ministry (MINSAP) called on Wednesday for the population’s support to the country-wide campaign against the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Speaking on local TV, MINSAP´s Director for Vector Control, Juan Ramon Vazquez stated that people's low perception of the risk posed by the mosquito plague has contributed to the sharp increase in infestation registered this summer, when vector-associated diseases are on the rise.

The expert warned that despite Cuba’s expertise in vector control, comparable to that of developed nations, individual efforts are still essential to the fight for the eradication of the Aedes, which transmits such dangerous diseases as dengue and yellow fever.

According to the report, about 98 municipalities of the country have confirmed the presence of the mosquito, however only 23 of them reached the level of disease transmission, among them the capital's 15 municipalities and the main cities of Pinar del Rio, Camagüey, Las Tunas, Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Santa Clara, Bayamo and the Isle of Youth./ RHC
