For the first time in its democratic period, Brazil is currently target of an official international investigation against the government of Jair Bolsonaro for its environmental and human rights policies.
According to Jamil Chade, columnist at UOL news website, the initiative came from UN special rapporteur Baskut Tunkat, who is responsible for toxic waste and human rights issues.
Chade explains that in order that the investigation takes place, the governments must submit a draft resolution and the proposal must be approved by majority vote.
The text should be shown at the UN Human Rights Council late this week. The expert ended his term in mid 2020 and the report will be presented by the new rapporteur, Marcos Orellana.
Tunkat completed a mission in Brazil in late 2019 and identified several faults in the country in terms of the environment and human rights, the report said.
The report recommends the UN to hold 'a special session on the protection of the Amazon rainforest and human rights, ensuring that all stakeholders actively participate.' / PL
