The Covid-19 vaccine being developed jointly by Argentina and Mexico will be for all of Latin America and the Caribbean and not for profit, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced on Thursday.
In his morning press conference at the National Palace, the president dedicated that space to present the details of the drug that is expected to be available for distribution in the first months of 2021.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Marcelo Ebrard announced the scope of the agreement between the two countries for the production of between 150 and 250 million units and, according to him, it is the most advanced vaccine in the world, currently in phase 3.
Ebrard explained that it is a significant production agreement because the process is well advanced according to the clinical studies, so much so that the results are expected to be presented in November to the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks for approval.
The foreign minister praised the collaboration with AstraZeneca, the Slim Foundation which is financing the project, the University of Oxford and Abxience laboratory in Argentina, which will be the producer of the vaccine reagent and Mexico will be in charge of packaging it and completing the production process.
Ebrard recalled the existence of four memoranda of understanding for vaccines with the participation of Mexico and that the entire region will benefit from this agreement between his country and Argentina.
Lopez Obrador said he had a telephone conversation with his Argentinean counterpart, Alberto Fernandez, who informed him that the protocols had been signed and everything was ready to start the collaboration.
