China has warned that it will apply sanctions against United States personnel and entities in response to the enactment of a law which retaliates for alleged violations in Hong Kong, which Beijing describes as meddling in internal affairs.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stresses in a statement that Beijing will take measures in defense of its national interests in the face of the above-mentioned legislation and the decree signed by President Donald Trump to make official the cessation of preferential treatment to Hong Kong.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry warned the White House called on Washington to correct its mistakes and refrain from putting into effect, otherwise its action will have negative effects on its own interests in the zone.

Trump signed the so-called Hong Kong Autonomy Law a few hours ago and also the decree eliminating special treatment 'as a separate travel and customs territory' from mainland China.

The first measure includes visa restrictions on Hong Kong officials, freezing of assets and economic sanctions against important Chinese government institutions.

The second, on its part, involves changing bilateral agreements to abolish visas, maintain a currency indexed to the dollar and favorable business policies, tariffs and trade protections. / PL
