Contrary to the criteria of U.S. President Donald Trump, the Covid-19 pandemic could last 12 to 18 months, contrary to other estimates, according to a Harvard specialist.
"This is not a virus that will disappear in two or four weeks or six weeks. We're going to live with this, one way or another, for 12 to 18 months if we're lucky,' said Dr. Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Institute for Global Health.
During a live question-and-answer session via social media, Jha specified that's how long some health officials have predicted it would take to develop a vaccine.
'Once we have a vaccine that is effective and widely deployed, we can put an end to the pandemic,' he said, stressing that 'in the meantime we will have to continue to deal with the virus.'
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization, set a deadline in February to find an antidote to the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus, which causes Covid-19.
Last week, a vaccine trial in the United States announced that its first patient received a dose.
The country is on a crest in the spread of the virus. Official data confirmed more than 69,190 infections - about 37,000 of them in New York state alone - and deaths surpassed the 1,000 mark. / PL
