The death of a worker in China as a result of Hantavirus raises great concern among experts and the population because it could bring a pause to the fight against Covid-19, amid predictions of a possible outbreak in the spring.

According to the Global Times newspaper, the individual was traveling on Monday along with 29 other workers from the Shanxi province to the Shandong province when he began to experience discomfort, was found to have the disease and died the same day despite receiving urgent treatment.

The results of tests carried out on his colleagues are being awaited, amid growing concern, since the Hantavirus can be transmitted by inhaling contaminated air released from the excreta and urine of those infected, and also via blood.

The microorganism is transmitted by various kinds of rodents, causes hemorrhagic fever, affects the lungs and kidneys, its symptoms are similar to influenza and can rapidly progress into complications, with a fatal outcome.

Every year it reappears in the periods of May-June and October-December, with hundreds of deaths in rural areas of China, Russia, Finland and Sweden.

Although Hantavirus is preventable and there is a vaccine to treat it, its outbreak now adds pressure, as China still faces the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak and its consequent pneumonia.

China seeks to address any fissures in the epidemiological control and prevention mechanism, from customs to quarantine sites, because the number of asymptomatic and imported Covid-19 patients is growing, and they constitute a new challenge.

China has reduced the daily report of local infections of Covid-19 to a single digit, and even to zero in recent days, but it has recorded an increase in those who do not show symptoms, and patients who come from other countries, mostly nationals. / PL
